Queensland Ports Association
The Queensland Ports Association (QPA) is the peak industry body representing all the Queensland Port Authorities.
The QPA unites five port corporations managing 15 trading ports, focusing on efficient and sustainable port operations that support Queensland’s economic growth:
- Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd
- Gladstone Ports Corporation
- North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation
- Townsville Port
- Ports North
Purpose
To ensure that Queensland Port Authorities work collectively on matters of common interest and support port policy development, governance and implementation.
- Collaborate on strategic issues affecting Queensland ports, including environment, planning and sustainability.
- Develop unified industry positions to inform policy and regulatory decisions.
- Represent Queensland ports in engagement with government, regulators and key stakeholders.
- Coordinate sector reporting and national collaboration through Ports Australia.
- Promote responsible growth that supports trade, regional economies and long-term sustainability.
Governance
The QPA is governed by an Executive Committee which is comprised of the Chief Executive Offices from the five Queensland Port Authorities.
History of the Queensland Ports Association
The Queensland Ports Association (QPA) has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1916, evolving through various phases to become a pivotal organisation in managing Queensland's trading ports.
The QPA was first established in 1916 when the first meeting of the Queensland Government Harbour Boards was contemplating legislation dealing with Harbours.
The QPA was reestablished in 1947 and consisted of an annual conference which was held to discuss key business, until 1970 when an Executive Committee comprising of Chairpersons from all port boards started meeting more frequently.
During the years, a number of sub-committees were established to deal with technical matters including:
- Engineers
- Management Advisory Group
- Environment and planning
- Communications working group
The QPA currently has one sub-committee – The Environment, Planning and Sustainability Working Group.
